BA Grade/Risk: 45/High.
Track Record: Garcia is the younger brother of Red Sox outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia. Johanfran impressed with standout power as an amateur catcher. He validated that impression in his second pro season in 2023, crushing Florida Complex League pitching to a .302/.408/.497 line and earning a promotion to Low-A Salem. He returned to Salem in 2024 and was off to an excellent start before rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in his knee while running the bases in May, requiring season-ending surgery.
Scouting Report: Garcia unloads swings with the intention of smashing the ball into pieces. His approach yields pull-side impact on contact and plenty of whiffs. Garcia’s 30% strikeout rate across two Low-A seasons suggests a below-average hit tool along with his above-average power. Defensively, he frames well and has shown pop times under two seconds, but he’ll need to work to maintain the athleticism to stay behind the dish. His injury will likely consign him to the injured list at the outset of 2025, and it may result in more time at both DH and first base in addition to his catching duties when he returns.
The Future: Garcia should return to Salem in the first half of the 2025 season, with the chance to reach High-A Greenville by the second half. He profiles as a power-hitting backup catcher but could emerge as a primary catcher if he can limit his strikeouts.

BA Grade: 50/Extreme
Track Record: The Red Sox have a long history with Garcia, whose older brother is outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia, who signed with the club in 2019. Johanfran stood out during the scouting process for his sound swing decisions, ability to hit the ball hard the other way and impressive exit velocities. He was a force in the Florida Complex League in 2023. His .904 OPS ranked fifth among 18-year-olds and he forced his way to Low-A Salem in August.
Scouting Report: Garcia has the strength and bat speed to drive the ball--particularly pitches down in the zone--with ease from his balanced, upright stance. He leaves little on the table when his bat syncs up with a powerful torso rotation. Garcia has all-fields power ability, but most of his righthanded power manifests to his pull side. His swing is long, which creates holes in the zone that suggest a below-average hit tool, but he limits his chases and shows plenty of potential impact when he makes contact. Garcia already has a powerful build and will have to work to avoid getting too big for catcher, but he moves well and shows average technical skills, including strike-stealing on the edges of the zone. He showed sub-2.0 -second pop times on throws to second base with solid accuracy, while he threw out 32% of basestealers in 2023. He also showed promise at first base as an amateur.
The Future: Garcia should open 2024 in Low-A Salem and has the potential to be an everyday catcher on the strength of his solid defense and above-average power.
