School: Oregon State
Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted
Age At Draft: 21.2
BA Grade: 45/High
Tools: Fastball: 55. Slider: 60. Changeup: 40. Control: 45.
May has long intrigued scouts with his pure arm talent, and ranked as the No. 325 prospect in the 2022 class with Lima (Ariz.) JC thanks to a fastball that got into the mid 90s. He didn’t get drafted and played the 2023 season at Arizona, where he struggled with consistency and command, then transferred to Oregon State where he finally put everything together for the first time. With the Beavers, May posted a 3.05 ERA over 73.2 innings and 14 starts with a 27% strikeout rate and 7.4% walk rate. A well-developed and physical righthander with a 6-foot-2, 196-pound frame, May throws with a bit of effort from a low three-quarters slot. He averaged 94 mph with a sinking fastball that touches 98, but actually threw a high-spin sweeping slider more often and as his primary offering. The slider is a plus breaking ball that gets a tremendous amount of horizontal movement—about 18 inches on average—and generated a 41% miss rate this spring. He’ll also mix in a hard upper-80s changeup but the pitch is a distant third offering in his arsenal and is mostly used in right-on-left matchups. There’s reliever risk with May thanks to his delivery and pitch usage, but a strong 2024 season and solid control could allow him a chance to start in pro ball.

BA Grade/Risk: 45/High.
Track Record: May struggled quite a bit as a sophomore at Arizona, but transferred to Oregon State and had a strong junior season. That performance vaulted him into the second round, where the Marlins signed him for an under-slot $900,000 bonus. Due to a heavy workload and a forearm injury he sustained in college, May did not make his pro debut after signing.
Scouting Report: May is an athletic mover on the mound, though he tends to open up with his front shoulder and falls off to the first base side rather than extending down the mound. His fastball sits 93-96 mph with some armside run, and he holds his velocity deep into starts. His slider is an easy plus pitch with tight, horizontal sweep. He throws it versus either side, and it projects as a wipeout two-strike weapon to righties. His changeup is firm, and its shape can be inconsistent. At times, it’s a flat offering that doesn’t have much velocity separation. At other times, it will show late dive. He has a bulldog mentality on the mound and is generally around the zone, though he sometimes overthrows his fastball.
The Future: May needs to tighten up the consistency on his changeup, but he has the tools to develop into a midrotation starter. He will likely spend most or all of 2025 in the Florida State League.

School: Pima (Ariz.) JC Committed/Drafted: Arizona
Age At Draft: 19.2
A 6-foot-2, 195-pound righthander, May has been scouted heavily during the 2022 season with Pima (Ariz.) JC. He came out of the gate extremely hot with a fastball up into the 95-96 mph range, but that velocity trended down over the course of the spring and his control was scattered as well. His overall results in juco were disappointing, as May posted a 5.21 ERA over 12 starts and 46.2 innings, with 50 strikeouts and 28 walks. Scouts have offered mixed feedback on the quality of his fastball life, likely depending on when in the season they saw him, and May will also throw a breaking ball that blends between a slider and curveball, with solid bite when he hits on it. He’s infrequently used a changeup, but it was a distant third pitch this spring. May’s performance could make it more likely that he heads to Arizona for the 2023 season, but some scouts think he’s the perfect sort of arm to get in a player development system—with loud pure stuff but some refinement needed.
