BA Grade/Risk: 50/High.
Track Record: A late addition to the Tigers’ 2022 international class out of Venezuela, Montilla quickly impressed with his baseball IQ, defense and bat-to-ball skills, although his lack of physicality led the Tigers to keep him in the Dominican Summer League for two seasons. He reached the States in 2024, leading the Tigers to the Florida Complex League title—he went 3-for-4 with a double, two walks and four RBIs in the championship game. A promotion to Low-A Lakeland after the FCL season ended didn’t go as smoothly.
Scouting Report: Montilla’s athleticism is apparent. What’s much less clear is how much bigger and stronger he’s going to get to be able to take advantage of that athleticism. His exit velocities show that he can sting the ball at times, but he also can be overpowered by more experienced pitchers. He has an excellent baseball IQ to go with the feet, hands and actions to be a big league shortstop. He has a plus arm. The Tigers moved him and the rest of their FCL infielders around the diamond, but he doesn’t have the power to profile at second or third base, at least for now. He has plus speed and swiped 30 bases in 38 attempts in 2024.
The Future: Montilla’s ability to make contact and provide above-average defense at shortstop gives him a great foundation. The hope is that as he matures he’ll add some power as well. The late-season cameo at Lakeland gave him a chance to get acclimated to what should be his 2025 assignment.

Montilla is an athletic player who should play in the middle of the diamond, with a pair of plus tools between his speed and arm strength. He's a switch-hitter with good bat speed from both sides of the plate, showing a more polished swing path from the left side and more power from the right.
