  Flanagan won a CIF Division 2 championship in high school in Southern California and was a reliable reliever for UCLA in his freshman 2022 season, where he posted a 3.28 ERA over 60.1 innings. After the season he was invited to Team USA’s National Team trials roster. In 2023, Flanagan transitioned to a starting role and posted a 5.12 ERA over 31.2 innings, with a 21.1% strikeout rate and 10.9% walk rate. He didn’t pitch until April after dealing with forearm tightness early in the season, and has a long history of arm issues going back to a Tommy John surgery he had in high school. Flanagan’s velocity will fluctuate, but he typically sits in the 89-91 mph range, though he has been up to 94. The pitch has tremendous vertical break, and averaged around 21 inches of induced vertical break this spring. A changeup around 80 mph is his most-used secondary, and the pitch he has the best feel for now, but he has both a slow curveball in the low 70s and a slider in the low 80s as well. Flanagan could be a polarizing player given his medical history and the fact that he has just 92 total innings under his belt with UCLA, but most scouts are intrigued with his stuff from the left side.
