Track Record: Durbin spent just one full season in the Braves system before being dealt to the Yankees before the 2023 season in the deal that brought reliever Lucas Luetge to Atlanta. Durbin has been tremendous in two seasons with New York, with injuries one of the only blotches on his resume. He was a participant in the last two Arizona Fall League seasons, and in 2024 broke the league’s all-time stolen base mark. In December 2024, the Yankees traded Durbin and lefthander Nestor Cortes to the Brewers in exchange for reliever Devin Williams.
Scouting Report: At his best, Durbin shows the skills typical of a pest who hits at the top or bottom of a lineup. He’s an extremely aggressive hitter who makes a ton of contact, albeit without a ton of impact. In 2024 he missed just 16% of the time, including just 11% on pitches in the zone. To get the most out of his offensive skill set, the Yankees wanted to see him be a little more selective with his swing decisions and look for pitches to impact instead of merely making contact. Durbin is a plus runner who shows strong instincts on the basepaths. He is a versatile defender who saw time at all three non-shortstop spots on the infield as well a handful of games in the outfield as well. Second or third base is his most likely home, and he should be average at either spot thanks to quick feet and a throwing arm which is at least average.
The Future: Durbin should make his MLB debut in 2025 and has a chance to be a versatile infielder who provides contact and speed.
