The brother of D-backs 2021 first-rounder Matt McLain, Sean is another talented middle infielder who has been a solid contributor for Arizona State over the last two seasons. After slashing .322/.386/.519 with 18 doubles and a 23-game hitting streak in the 2021 season—while playing second, right and center—McLain went to the Cape Cod League, where he hit just .227/.370/.364 in a brief six-game stint. He moved into the starting shortstop role for the 2022 season and continued to put up numbers in the Pac-12: a .330/.430/.458 slash line with 13 doubles and a better strikeout rate (15.7 K%) than what he managed in 2021 (22.3 K%). While McLain lacks the power to be an everyday player, he did improve his profile this spring by proving he can handle shortstop, with solid bat-to-ball skills. He could improve his swing decisions, and he currently chases breaking and offspeed offerings out of the zone, but after back-to-back .300 seasons there’s hope he can make enough contact with line drive doubles power. He’s a solid runner who might be best utilized in a super-utility role at the next level and his development of more raw power will determine his overall upside.
