Coastal Carolina’s run to the 2025 College World Series finals was fueled by one of the best pitching staffs in the country—a deep stable of analytically-inclined homegrown arms that includes potential 2026 first-rounder and New Jersey native Cameron Flukey. So it’s notable that the Chants landed a commitment from Cairone, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound lefthander from the same state who also trains with Baseball Performance Center in the offseason. Cairone is young for the class and has great feel to spin the ball, and his velocity took a big step forward in 2025. After pitching in the mid 80s during the 2024 summer, Cairone pushed his heater into the low 90s and topped out at 94 mph this spring with impressive extension from a lower release height. But the gem of his arsenal is a big, sweeping breaking ball at 78-83 mph that pushes 3,000 rpm and regularly sits in the 2,800 rpm band. He also added a mid-80s cutter variant this spring and has a mid-80s changeup that he uses sparingly. Cairone mostly relies on his fastball/slider combination and there’s some effort to his delivery, which he employs exclusively from the stretch. It’s more control than command at this stage and he’ll likely need to keep rounding out his arsenal to remain a viable starter in pro ball, but Cairone’s loud two-pitch attack and intriguing pitch traits could make him a target for a team between rounds two and five.

Track Record: As an underclassman in high school, Cairone wasn’t heavily recruited before he committed to Coastal Carolina. Young for the 2025 class—he was still 17 on draft day—Cairone was mostly pitching the mid-to-upper 80s the summer before his draft year, then in 2025 jumped into the low 90s. That velocity spike—along with his slider and other traits—propelled him up draft boards, with the Brewers selecting him in the supplemental second round (68th overall) and signing him for $1,097,500.
Scouting Report: Cairone has an array of promising projection indicators. He will pitch all of 2026 as an 18-year-old, and while he has a thicker build with some physical maturity, there could be another velocity increase still to come. Cairone pitches in the low 90s and touches 94 mph. He comes at hitters from a low release height out of a low three-quarters slot with above-average extension, release traits that help his fastball play up. His low-80s slider has wide sweep across the zone with tight rotation, often spinning above 2,800 rpm, to get a high dose of swing-and-miss to project as a plus pitch. Cairone mixes in an occasional mid-80s cutter and didn’t throw his changeup much in high school, leading some scouts to project a below-average changeup, but the Brewers internally see signs of that pitch beating those projections. It’s mostly a sound delivery, but there is some effort to his operation and he will need to tighten his command.
The Future: Cairone is one of the best breakout candidates in the lower levels of the Brewers’ system entering 2026. He’s young enough that it wouldn’t be a surprise for him to open in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League, but he should see Low-A Wilson at some point in 2026.
