Age At Draft: 18.4
BA Grade: 55/Extreme
Fien is one of the most well-rounded hitters in the high school class. His performance on the 2024 summer showcase circuit stacks up with anyone, and he was one of the most reliable hitters with USA Baseball’s 18U National Team. Listed at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, Fien is a righthanded hitter and a shortstop now who is likely to move to third base or an outfield corner in the future. His swing is unconventional, but it works for him. He has a narrow setup and a high handset with a slight hitch in his swing and a bat path that always looks a bit stiffer than scouts would prefer. It’s hard to doubt his results, however, and Fien has an advanced feel to backspin the ball to all fields with authority and tap into his plus raw power with consistency against high-quality pitching. He’s got plenty of strength and bat speed that pairs with contact skills and pitch recognition that should give him above-average pure hitting potential to go with above-average game power. Fien isn’t much of a runner, and as he fills out his frame his fringy speed could back up even further. He doesn’t have the nimble footwork required for middle infield and should be a better fit at third base, where his plus arm would fit nicely. Fien played first base with Team USA and could also profile in right field if necessary. He’s committed to Texas but has first-round upside even as a right-right corner profile, thanks to his hit/power combination.

Track Record: Entering the 2025 draft cycle, Fien had earned a reputation as one of the best prep hitters in the class. The California native hit .400/.429/.680 for USA Baseball’s 18U National Team in 2024, which included a who’s who of the following year’s first-rounders. The Rangers drafted Fien 12th overall and used a $4.8 million bonus to sign him away from a commitment to Texas. His official pro debut consisted of 10 games for Low-A Hickory. The Rangers traded him to the Nationals in January as the headliner of the six-player MacKenzie Gore exchange.
Scouting Report: Part of the reason the Rangers were so comfortable calling Fien’s name with their first pick was because of the long history he had developed with area scout Steve Flores. That relationship, plus Fien’s stellar track record, made the choice easy. At the plate, he does a good job discerning balls from strikes, limits his chase rate and uses a short, quick swing to help him catch up to premium velocity. As an amateur, Fien drew skepticism from scouts for his swing because of the way he holds his hands and a stiffer bat path than is typical for a player with his kind of production. Defensively, he has plenty of work to do to remain on the infield. Already big and physical at 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, his frame and footwork could fit better at third base than shortstop. He has a plus arm. Fien also got some experience at first base during his high school career, but he’s already been in the lab with Rangers infield coordinator Kenny Holmberg to improve his chances of staying on the left side. Fien is a below-average runner and likely won’t be better than fringy no matter where he lands on defense.
The Future: Fien will likely return to Low-A in 2026 to begin his first full season as a pro but could hit his way to High-A by season’s end. His ceiling is as an offensive-minded third baseman who provides most of his value in the batter’s box.

Fien is a 6-foot-3, 200-pound infielder and outfielder who in 2024 established himself as one of the most impressive offensive players in the prep class. He produced at a high level seemingly everywhere he played, and was one of Team USA’s most accomplished hitters on the 18U National team when he went 10-for-25 (.400) with three doubles and two triples in eight games. Fien’s setup and swing is a bit unorthodox. He has a narrow setup and high handset with a slight hitch in his load and leg kick to start his lower half before firing through the zone with a barrel that often looks a bit stiff. He makes it work, though, and has hit quality pitching to a degree that provides confidence in his hitting ability and usable power. Fien played first base for Team USA but is still learning the position and could profile as a third baseman or corner outfielder.
