Trade Central: Dodgers Add Bullpen Depth

THE DEAL

The Dodgers, looking to prop up a bullpen that appeared fatigued in recent weeks, acquired swingman Jesse Chavez from Toronto for righthander Mike Bolsinger.

Primarily utilizing a cut fastball that rises and a four-seam fastball, Chavez strikes out more than a batter an inning and has a career-best 4.2 strikeout-to-walk ratio this year out of the Toronto bullpen. But he’s had a problem with the home run ball, giving up nine in just 41 1/3 innings as his home run-flyball percentage spiked to 19.1 percent, far above his career 12.3 percent rate. He’s a free agent after the season, having signed a one-year, $4 million contract before the season.

Bolsinger was effective as a fill-in starter for the injury-plagued Dodgers in 2015, going 6-6, 3.62 but got knocked around this season before being demoted to Oklahoma City. He’ll serve as Triple-A depth, the role Drew Hutchison filled before he was traded to Pittsburgh as part of the deal for Francisco Liriano.
