LAKELAND, Fla.—Jorge Mateo has always had plenty of raw power, but it hadn’t shown up in games very often. Instead, the Yankees’ No. 1 prospect in this year’s Midseason Top 10 (before the team added a haul of new talent at the trade deadline) had relied on his 80-grade speed to leg out hits and cause havoc on the basepaths.

On Wednesday, the 21-year-old showed that he’s more than just a slash-and-burn guy by crushing his seventh home run of the season to the opposite field off of Lakeland’s Austin Kubitza as part of a 3-for-5 day.
