Prospect Report: Christopher Morel, Nelson Velazquez Go Yard For Cubs
Christopher Morel, 3B/2B, Cubs – Morel continues to be a bright spot in the Cubs rebuild. The 23-year-old rookie went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Cubs to a 6-3 win over the Nationals on Monday. His home run off veteran Anibal Sanchez left his bat at 109.4 mph and traveled 399 feet into the left-center bleachers at Wrigley Field. Morel is now batting .263 with 10 home runs, 31 RBIs and nine stolen bases in 63 games this season and is firmly solidifying his place as a part of the Cubs future.
Nelson Velazquez, OF, Cubs – The Cubs other big midseason callup, Velazquez got the scoring started with a solo home run in the third inning of the Cubs win over the Nationals. He finished 3-for-4 and boosted his OPS to .796 on the season.
Jose Barrero, SS, Reds – Barrero missed the start of the season after having surgery to remove a broken hamate bone and struggled initially when he returned, but those struggles appear to be a thing of the past. After hitting the first two home runs of his career in the same game Aug. 6, Barrero added another multi-hit game by going 2-for-4 in the Reds 5-1 loss to the Mets. He also stole a base, his first of the season and third of his young career.
