With RHP Mitch Keller, SS Oneil Cruz and 3B Ke'Brayan Hayes, the Pirates have three Top 100 prospects on their 60-man roster, with Cruz on the alternate training site roster that will be in Altoona. Two other top 10 prospects in the system—RHP Cody Bolton and SS Ji-Hwan Bae—will join Cruz in Altoona. So will CF Travis Swaggerty and 1B Mason Martin.
The Pirates drafted SS/2B Nick Gonzales with the No. 7 overall pick this year and he immediately stepped in as the organization's second-best prospect and a Top 100 prospect, yet the Pirates left him off their 60-man roster. Other top 10 prospects in the system left off the roster include SS Liover Peguero and RHPs Tahnaj Thomas, Quinn Priester and Brennan Malone. They also left off OF Sammi Siani, their supplemental first-round pick in 2019.
The obvious names are all here, since Keller, Hayes and Cruz are all on the 40-man roster already, with Keller and Hayes in the picture to help in 2020 during a normal season. But the Pirates, who have a new general manager and are in the midst of a rebuild, went conservative by leaving off their lower-level prospects. Adding players like Gonzales, Peguero and their young pitching prospects would have been helpful for their development, but instead they will stay at home.
