The pool of 96 players who are eligible for potential Prospect Promotion Incentive draft picks was determined in January, when Baseball America, ESPN and MLB Pipeline all published Top 100 Prospects rankings.

An MLB club can earn a draft pick after the first round if a PPI-eligible player accrues one year of service as a rookie and then factors for a major award.

The most direct means of PPI draft pick acquisition is if an eligible player wins a Rookie of the Year award. The Mariners’ Julio Rodriguez did just that in 2022, bestowing Seattle with the 29th pick—and roughly $2.8 million in bonus pool money—in the 2023 draft.

The D-backs’ Corbin Carroll and the Orioles’ Gunnar Henderson won ROY awards in 2023, earning their clubs the 31st and 32nd picks in the 2024 draft. That draft position is subject to change slightly based on free agent compensation.

But there is another way players with continuing PPI eligibility may outfit their clubs with draft picks. If a PPI eligible player places top three in MVP or Cy Young Award voting prior to qualifying for arbitration, then his club receives a draft pick after the first round.

No player has accomplished this yet. The 2022 rookie class has one more chance this season, while the 2023 rookie class has two more tries.

Presented here are the players with continuing PPI eligibility.

Rookie Class Of 2022

Shane Baz, RHP, Rays
Hunter Greene, RHP, Reds
Nick Lodolo, LHP, Reds
Jeremy Peña, SS, Astros
Geraldo Perdomo, SS, D-backs
Joe Ryan, RHP, Twins
Bryson Stott, SS, Phillies
Bobby Witt Jr., SS, Royals

These players must place top three in MVP or CYA balloting in 2024 to trigger a PPI draft pick.

Note: Julio Rodriguez won American League Rookie of the Year in 2022, ending his PPI eligibility and earning the Mariners the No. 29 pick in the 2023 draft.

Rookie Class Of 2023

Francisco Alvarez, C, Mets
Hunter Brown, RHP, Astros
Triston Casas, 1B, Red Sox
Cade Cavalli, RHP, Nationals
Josh Jung, 3B, Rangers
Logan O’Hoppe, C, Angels
Ezequiel Tovar, SS, Rockies
Anthony Volpe, SS, Yankees
Ken Waldichuk, LHP, Athletics

These players must place top three in MVP or CYA balloting in 2024 or 2025 to trigger a PPI draft pick. Cavalli also is eligible for the 2024 ROY award because he has not exceeded 45 days on the active MLB roster. The bulk of his MLB service has been accrued on the injured list.

Note: Corbin Carroll won National League Rookie of the Year and Gunnar Henderson won American League Rookie of the Year, ending the players’ PPI eligibility and earning the D-backs and Orioles the Nos. 31 and 32 picks in the 2024 draft.
