Latest News On Luis Robert

The Cardinals, Padres and White Sox each held private workouts last week in the Dominican Republic for Luis Robert, the 19-year-old Cuban outfielder who is eligible to sign on May 20.

At the workout with St. Louis, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak was among the attendees. The White Sox had vice president Ken Williams and general manager Rick Hahn at their workout for Robert. Padres general manager A.J. Preller was not at San Diego’s workout with Robert, though special assistant Moises Alou and international scouting director Chris Kemp were there. Robert homered against live pitching at all three workouts.

The Athletics, Reds ands Astros are three other clubs known to have held private workouts with Robert as well. Aside from the White Sox, all of those clubs have already exceeded their bonus pools for the current 2016-17 international signing period, which closes on June 15. Those teams are already subject to the penalty of being unable to sign any players subject to the bonus pools for the next two signing periods (2017-18 and 2018-19), so signing Robert wouldn’t trigger any additional signing restriction penalties for them.

The White Sox are the only team in that mix that is not over their 2016-17 bonus pool, though it’s possible they might change that by signing Robert.
