From The Binghamton Mets To …

In the third minor league re-brand in the last 24 hours, the Binghamton Mets announced on Thursday morning that they would become the Rumble Ponies for the 2017 season and beyond. The name and logo change is part of a total makeover that includes renovations to NYSEG Stadium.

Team president John Hughes announced the name change at Franklin Elementary School on Thursday. The ceremony was streamed live on Facebook.

“It’s going to be something that represents our community and, I think, tells a story and makes everybody proud,” team president John Hughes said before the name was announced. “It makes people say, ‘Hey, why is the team named this?” and they say ‘Well, here’s the story behind it. How great is that?”

On Wednesday, the former Jacksonville Suns have announced they’d changed their name to the Jumbo Shrimp. Later in the day the Down East club, which will play its home games in Kinston, N.C., announced they’d be the Wood Ducks. Their logo was not available.

Also this offseason, the Brevard County moved to Osceola County and became the Florida Fire Frogs. The New Orleans Zephyrs will announce their new name on Nov. 15, and the Staten Island Yankees have a makeover in the offing as well.
