Dodgers Acquire Josh Fields For Fresh Cuban Signee

THE DEAL

As part of an effort to patch their weary pitching staff, the Dodgers added journeyman fireballer Josh Fields to a deadline-day haul that also included Jesse Chavez from Toronto. To do so, they sent one of their newest Cuban signees to Houston.

The Dodgers’ biggest problem this year has been their pitching. Their rotation has been beset with injuries since spring training, and their bullpen has been unreliable at best. They addressed those needs Monday, in part, by acquiring Jesse Chavez from Toronto for Mike Bolsinger. In a final flourish, they added Fields from Houston, betting on his peripherals rather than his counting stats. He works primarily with a mid-90s fastball and mixes in a pair of breaking balls—slider, curveball—as well. He was striking out bunches of hitters even when he was getting hit at the highest level, racking up 20 whiffs against just three walks while getting hit around in Houston. The Dodgers are banking that Fields’ power arm and propensity for punchouts can help salve their bullpen.

Yordan Alvarez, inf

Just before this year’s international signing period closed in June, the Dodgers landed Alvarez for $2 million (plus a $2 million tax for exceeding their allotted spending pool). Now, without playing a single game for the Dodgers, he’s on the move to Houston. He’s around 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds and earns high marks from scouts for his smooth lefthanded swing. He also has average or better power from the left side, though he needs to work on getting more leverage in his swing to tap into that power more often. He’s going to have to improve his defense at first base, but he is an offensive prospect first and foremost.
