Baseball America's 2020 MLB Player Of The Year Finalists

The truncated 60-game season did not allow for the typical rhythms and narratives that play out over 162 games. Still, our Major League Player of the Year discussion was spirited. Here are four others we considered in addition to winner Freddie Freeman of the Braves.

Shane Bieber, RHP

The Indians’ ace led the majors with a 1.63 ERA and 122 strikeouts, while tying the Cubs’ Yu Darvish with eight wins. He was the clear top pitcher in baseball in 2020.

Jose Ramirez, 3B

Cleveland’s No. 2 hitter contributed across the board, hitting .292/.386/.607 with 17 home runs, 10 stolen bases, 46 RBIs and 45 runs. A solid glove at the hot corner completes the picture.

Mookie Betts, RF

The Dodgers’ key offseason pickup delivered as expected. Betts showed his typical Gold Glove play in right field while hitting .292/.366/.562 with 16 home runs and 10 stolen bases.

Fernando Tatis Jr., SS

The key to the Padres’ renaissance, Tatis delivered huge power—17 homers and the top Statcast barrels rate in baseball—to go with Gold Glove-caliber defense at shortstop.
