Wednesday’s Stars
Shane McClanahan, LHP, Rays — Tampa Bay’s No. 6 prospect got the start on Wednesday night against against the Red Sox. The fireballing lefty hit 100 mph with his fastball as part of 1.1 scoreless innings. McClanahan zoomed from low Class A Bowling Green all the way to Double-A Montgomery in 2019 and established himself as one of the system’s top arms. His fastball-curveball combination could be knockout if deployed in relief, but his potential to round out his arsenal with an average changeup and slider give him hope to continue developing as a starter.
Trent Grisham, OF, Padres — Acquired from the Brewers with righthander Zach Davies this past offseason in the deal that sent Luis Urias to Milwaukee, San Diego is counting on Grisham to provide a combination of power and speed while holding down center field in spacious Petco Park. The 23-year-old Grisham went 1-for-3 and is hitting .355 this spring. He’ll be counted on to be a part of a new-look Padres lineup that also features Tommy Pham (acquired from the Rays).
Luis Patiño, RHP, Padres — The No. 2 arm in the Padres’ system, behind only lefty MacKenzie Gore (whom Patiño followed in relief on Wednesday) allowed an unearned run over an inning but struck out two in the process. Patiño is blessed with one of the livest arms in the minor leagues and can run his fastball up to 99 mph with what appears to be relative ease. He pairs the explosive heater with a potentially plus slider and a curveball that is just a tick behind. He needs to work to refine his changeup.
