Baseball America Prospect Report—April 6, 2021

Akil Baddoo, OF, Tigers — The Tigers’ Rule 5 pick did it again on Monday, socking his second career home run. This time, Baddoo victimized his former team by socking an opposite-field blast into the bullpen off of Randy Dobnak. It’s very early, but Detroit looks like it has something in the 22-year-old outfielder.

Trevor Rogers, LHP, Marlins — After leading the Grapefruit League with 29 strikeouts, Rogers made his season debut on Monday. The lefthander, who was impressive in 2020, whiffed six and walked four over four innings. His four-seam fastball topped at 98 mph, and he got swinging strikes on 15 of his 77 (19.4%) pitches.

Mac Sceroler, RHP, Orioles — On Monday, another Rule 5 pick made his big league debut in what is looking like a banner year for the class. The righthanded Sceroler was taken from the Reds’ organization and opened his big league career by facing … Aaron Judge … with the bases loaded. The result? Sceroler’s first big league strikeout, which came on a 95 mph fastball toward the bottom of the zone.

Jose De Leon, RHP, Reds — De Leon’s time as a prospect has been lengthy. Once ranked as high as 23 on BA’s Top 100, the righthander made his big league debut in 2016 but injuries have limited him to just 34.2 innings in his career. On Monday, De Leon recovered from an early home run and struck out nine over five innings against the Pirates. He used a mix of sinker, slider and changeup and topped at 95 mph.
