Baseball America Prospect Report -- April 30, 2019

Casey Mize, RHP, Tigers. Detroit’s top prospect was unhittable on Monday, going the distance in a nine-inning no hitter for Double-A Erie. The prized righthander faced just one batter over the minimum and struck out seven batters. Mize couldn’t find command of his fastball, so he went after hitters with most cutters and mixed in some breaking pitches as well as his plus splitter.

Nick Senzel, CF, Reds. The oft-injured Senzel collected four hits for Triple-A Louisville. The Reds’ top prospect had a two-run home run in the ninth inning and scored four times. If we manages to stay healthy for a stretch of time, Senzel should get the call to the big leagues this season.

Patrick Sandoval, LHP, Angels. Sandoval tossed five innings and allowed one run for Double-A Mobile. The Angels’ No. 12 prospect collected seven strikeouts while scattering three hits. This was his only start where he didn’t walk a batter.

Kyle Lewis, OF, Mariners. The Mariners’ No. 8 prospect had a four-RBI night for Double-A Arkansas. The toolsy outfielder had a line drive single in the first inning, followed by a three-run home run to right field in the fourth inning. The power is a welcomed sign for Lewis, who hasn’t been able to translate much of the plus-plus raw power he had in college during his pro career.

Pedro Castellanos, 1B, Red Sox. Castellanos had a three-hit game for high Class A Salem. He had two doubles and drove in two runs while scoring once. Boston’s No. 27 prospect has a knack for hitting lefties but needs to translate his raw power into games before profiling as an everyday regular.

Tyler Stephenson, C, Reds. The Reds’ No. 6 prospect had two hits and two RBIs for Double-A Chattanooga. Stephenson didn’t waste any time, crushing a two-run home run in the first inning. While he may not replace Tucker Barnhart any time soon, catching depth is always envious.

Luis Robert, DH/OF, White Sox. Robert is beginning to heat up again, as Chicago’s No. 5 prospect had a four-hit game for low Class Winston-Salem. Batting leadoff, Robert hit a triple and a two-run home run. Robert has all-star talent but will have to continue to improve his strike zone management and walk percentage in order to jump to the next level.

Tyler Phillips, RHP, Rangers. Phillips pitched seven scoreless innings for high Class A Down East. He struck out seven batters which helped him to navigate around three hits and three walks. The Rangers’ No. 20 prospect already has plus control and works with a solid fastball-changeup combo, but will need to refine his breaking ball to have success in the upper minors.

Jarren Duran, OF, Red Sox. Duran had three hits and scored a run for high Class A Salem. He fell a home run short of the cycle, collecting a double in the ninth inning to end his night. Bostons’ No. 12 prospect is now batting .404/.465/.562 with nine extra-base hits in 89 at-bats.

Logan Webb, RHP, Giants. Webb work around six hits in six innings with just one earned run for Double-A Richmond. The Giants’ No. 6 prospect did strike out 10 batters for his first double-digit strike out game of the season. Webb works mostly with a fastball-breaking ball combo and needs to continue refining his changeup in order to start in the future.
