Eric De La Rosa, OF, Tigers — Spencer Torkelson, Riley Greene and Ryan Kriedler might be gone, but there are still Tigers prospects providing power in the desert. De La Rosa, 24, went deep twice in Salt River’s games on Friday and Saturday, which is impressive considering he hit no more than three home runs at any of his three levels this past season. The homers were the first two of the AFL year for De La Rosa.

Joey Wiemer, OF, Brewers — The Paul Bunyan of the AFL continues to cut down all pitchers who dare cross his path. Wiemer, whose offensive renaissance came with a change in timing mechanisms, went 7-for-8 in his two weekend contests while striking out once and walking twice. He doubled twice and stole a pair of bases in that span as well. With his team depleted of its higher profile stars, Wiemer now serves as the Rafters’ leading supplier of power.

Nelson Velazquez, OF, Cubs — Velazquez’s strong turn in the AFL continued through the season’s second week. Between Friday and Saturday the slugging Cubs prospect went 4-for-8 with a double, a homer and two walks. He’s 10-for-27 to begin the AFL, with four doubles and the longball while drawing seven walks as well. After hitting just four home runs in his first two seasons as a pro, Velazquez, the Cubs’ fifth-round pick out of Puerto Rico in 2017, slammed 20 homers in a season split between High-A South Bend and Double-A Tennessee.

Asa Lacy, LHP, Royals — After a tough pro debut at High-A Quad Cities, the lefthanded Lacy put together a fine outing in his latest AFL start. Against Peoria, Lacy struck out five in two scoreless, hitless innings. He’s still scuffled with his control so far (four walks in 4.2 innings), but Lacy has also whiffed 10 over his first three starts for Surprise. A continuation of those trends would serve as an excellent rebound point in 2022.

Slade Cecconi, RHP, D-backs — After going for a combined five innings over his first two outings, Cecconi upped the ante and went four frames in his third turn in the Fall League. The righthander, whom Arizona took in the first round out of Miami in 2020, whiffed five over those four one-run innings without issuing a walk.
