Arizona Fall League Prospect Report — November 9, 2021

Elijah Dunham, OF, Yankees — Dunham continues to be a revelation in the AFL. The undrafted free agent from 2020 had a solid debut season as a pro, spent with High-A Hudson Valley, and has continued his success in the desert. On Monday, Dunham clubbed a double and a triple as part of a 2-for-3 day with two runs in a win for his Surprise squad. He leads the AFL in on-base percentage with a mark of an even .500.

Nelson Velazquez, OF, Cubs — Surprise, surprise, Velazquez had another big day. The Cubs’ prospect went 2-for-5 with a double and scored a run in Mesa’s wild comeback win over Scottsdale. Velazquez’s name is all over the AFL leaderboard. He’s current the league leader in the following categories: Average (.392), slugging percentage (.734), OPS (1.224), hits (31), extra-base hits (13), total bases (58) and runs (21). He’s just 11 points behind Elijah Dunham for the top spot in on-base percentage and four RBIs behind both Juan Yepez and Bryson Stott. In other words, he has a realistic chance of winning both the traditional and sabermetric triple crowns.

Andy Weber, INF, Cubs — Quietly, Weber has had a solid AFL campaign. On Monday, he came up huge for his Mesa club during its comeback win over Scottsdale. Weber’s contributions to the win included a triple (his league best-tying fourth of the fall) and a grand slam as part of a five-run fifth inning that gave Mesa its margin of victory. The home run was his second of the year and pushed his season OPS to 1.027. Weber’s offensive outburst is somewhat surprising given that he’s hit just five home runs in 756 career at-bats during his professional career.
