An Inside Look Scouting A Dominican Prospect Showcase

Predicting the futures of amateur players in Latin America is one of the most challenging jobs in baseball. One of the platforms teams use to evaluate players in countries like the Dominican Republic and Venezuela are showcases, often run by trainer-organized leagues such as the Dominican Prospect League.

Last week, international scouting directors and other high-ranking club officials spent four days in Joliet, Illinois watching some of the top 2018 and 2019 prospects from the DPL.

In addition to the usual player breakdowns and scouting reports that we will have for Baseball America subscribers on the top players at the event, I wanted to put together a video to give you an inside look and explanation of what exactly happens at these types of showcases.

The video should give you an idea of what happens at a typical showcase in Latin America, the reasons they’re structured that way, what scouts are looking for at each point during the workouts and the games and the unique structure of these games to accommodate both the players and the scouts in attendance.

If you like this video, let me know, and if you have any questions that weren’t answered in this video, leave me a comment below.
