After Trading Watson, Pirates Bring In Benoit

THE DEAL

The Phillies sent out one final veteran before the trade deadline on Monday, sending reliever Joaquin Benoit and cash to the Pirates in exchange for righthander Seth McGarry.

Benoit was the fourth veteran the last-place Phillies traded for prospects in the final week of the deadline, joining Pat Neshek, Howie Kendrick, and Jeremy Hellickson.

Benoit fills a bullpen opening the Pirates created when they traded lefty Tony Watson to the Dodgers earlier in the day.

PHILLIES ACQUIRE Seth McGarry, rhp Age: 23

The Pirates drafted McGarry in the eighth round out of Florida Atlantic in 2015 and turned him into a closer last year. The change has been a good one. McGarry has a power fastball that sits in the mid-90s and can reach 97 with life that makes it tough to square up. Neither his curveball nor changeup are out pitches, but that shortcoming has been mitigated in the bullpen.

2023 MLB Mock Draft Version 1.0

We’re four weeks into the college season so it’s time for the first edition of our 2023 Mock Draft.

PIRATES ACQUIRE Joaquin Benoit, rhp Age: 39

The oft-traded veteran joins the eighth team of his career and fifth in the last three seasons. Benoit has struggled with consistency here at the tail end of his career but still generates swings and misses, with 43 strikeouts in 42 innings for a strikeout rate that matches up nicely with his career mark.
