2018 MLB Draft Watch List

The page turned from the 2017 draft to the 2018 draft season quickly. From the Perfect Game National Showcase to the opening of summer collegiate leagues to USA Baseball’s June events—the 18U Tournament of Stars and trials for the Collegiate National Team—scouts had little time to catch their breath, but they did get an early look at the 2018 draft class.

The early favorite to be the top player drafted next year is Florida righthander Brady Singer, who went 2-0, 2.57 with 21 strikeouts and just three walks in 14 innings to help lead the Gators to their first College World Series title. Singer, who didn’t sign with the Blue Jays as a second-round pick in 2015, has used his time on campus to learn how to use his explosive stuff.

Singer’s top competition to go No. 1 overall comes from Southern California shortstop Brice Turang, who ranks at the top of the 2018 high school class. He could follow in the shoes of fellow SoCal shortstop Royce Lewis as a top pick next June.

Rk. Name Pos. School Ht. Wt. Scouting Report
1 Brady Singer RHP Florida 6-5 200 Singer pairs electric fastball life with a slider he locates effectively. He struck out 129 batters in 126 innings.
2 Nick Madrigal SS/2B Oregon State 5-7 161 Small in size, Madrigal is an offensive middle infielder with elite hands and a strong arm.
3 Shane McClanahan LHP South Florida 6-1 173 A quick-armed lefty, McClanahan used a dominant fastball to strike out 104 batters in 74 innings.
4 Travis Swaggerty OF South Alabama 5-11 180 The twitchy center fielder has the power-speed combo to earn Jacoby Ellsbury comps.
5 Jeremy Eierman SS/3B Missouri State 6-1 205 Power-hitting middle infielder may move off short, but his bat will play. Hit .313 with 23 home runs in 2017.
6 Tristan Pompey OF Kentucky 6-4 205 Younger brother of Blue Jays’ Dalton, Tristan has more power and tools, but similar athleticism.
7 Casey Mize RHP Auburn 6-3 208 Injuries are concerning, but Mize combines power stuff with premium command.
8 Joey Bart C Georgia Tech 6-3 220 Catchers with power who can catch generally fly off the board. He led Georgia Tech with 13 home runs.
9 Seth Beer OF/DH Clemson 6-3 200 Tough to peg with an elite, powerful bat to go along with poor defense and speed. He may be a DH.
10 Konnor Pilkington LHP Mississippi State 6-3 225 A physical southpaw with three above-average pitches is a safe bet. He held opponents to a .199 average.

7 Jarred Kelenic OF Waukesha (Wis.) West HS 6-1 190 An athletic, muscle-bound center fielder with some power and defensive instincts.
8 Slade Cecconi RHP Trinity Prep HS, Winter Park, Fla. 6-4 195 He has a fastball up to 97 mph with plane, as well as feel for a mid-80s breaker.
9 Mason Denaburg RHP/C Merritt Island (Fla.) HS 6-4 195 The top two-way prep, he has a mid-90s fastball and some pop in his bat.
10 Carter Stewart RHP Eau Gallie HS, Melbourne, Fla. 6-6 195 Throws one of the highest spin-rate breaking balls of any pitcher in the class.

The top of this year’s class is exciting, but there are plenty of prospects who have already made an impression and have a chance to crack our rankings as the summer, fall and spring unfold. Here’s a list of players to watch out for as the draft class starts to crystallize.
