Carolina-California League
Carolina 6, California 4
June 21 • Lake Elsinore, Calif.
Synopsis: Bobby Bradley hit a towering home run and fellow Indians farmhand Greg Allen scored three runs and stole two bases for the winners.
Game MVP: • Nationals No. 8 prospect Andrew Stevenson hit two RBI triples, demonstrating the ability to drive the ball to both gaps and impressive speed flying around the bases. He finished 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI was named MVP.
Prospect Notes: Justus Sheffield, the Indians’ first-round pick in 2014 and BA’s No. 81 prospect in the Top 100, entered in the sixth inning and sat 93-94 with the fastball but had trouble locating. He was bailed out by his catcher, fellow Lynchburg teammate Daniel Salters, who threw out back-to-back runners trying to steal second base for the first two outs of the inning. Salters registered pop times of 1.88 and 1.97 on the throws. … The Giants’ C.J. Hinojosa and Chris Shaw had RBI doubles … Giants rigthander Rodolfo Martinez, the Cal League leader in saves with San Jose, flashed the top velocity of the night, hitting 101 mph on his final fastball of the night to strike out Yu-Cheng Chang. … Fellow Giants reliever Reyes Moronta sat 95-97 mph with his fastball but left it over the plate and was tagged for three hits and two runs in his lone inning of work. … Rangers No. 28 prospect Travis Demeritte showed both his good and bad in the game. He struck out and doubled. … Padres lefthander Brad Wieck stands 6-foot-9 and sat 94 mph with his fastball. He also showed a 84 mph slider and backed down his changeup to 73 mph to keep hitters off balance.
Midwest League
East 11, West 10
June 21 • Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Synopsis: The East rallied from down 8-1 to beat the West 11-10, keyed by Eloy Jimenez’s three-run, game-tying homer in the ninth.
Game MVP: The Cubs’ Jimenez drove in four runs and made a terrific catch against the left field wall in foul ground to start the ninth inning.
Prospect Notes: Angel Perdomo, part of Toronto’s 2011 international class—along with the since-traded Miguel Castro, Jesus Tinoco, Alberto Tirado and lefthander Jairo Labourt—started to put things together in 2015 and has continued that progression this season, averaging 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings in 11 starts at Lansing. At the all-star game, he relieved Lansing teammate Jon Harris and blew away Brewers catcher Mitch Ghelfi on three pitches. … Twins catcher A.J. Murray—the club’s 15th-round pick a year ago from Georgia Tech—hit just one homer earlier in the day in the home run derby. In the all-star game itself, he hit a two-run blast to right field in the seventh inning against hard-throwing Cubs righthander Adbert Alzolay. … Diamondbacks righthander Justin Donatella, the 6-foot-6 former UC San Diego ace, who threw a scoreless inning and blew away Rays shortstop Jake Cronenworth, who otherwise showed a good approach with two walks, spitting on several offspeed offerings … Padres outfielder Michael Gettys stole two bases, showing his plus speed … Brewers third baseman Jake Gatewood had a booming RBI double in the first inning, although he later threw away a ball after making a nice scoop on a slow roller … Diamondbacks DH Trevor Mitsui, who drove in three runs, including two on a long double in the first inning.
Southern League
South 5, North 1
June 21 • Biloxi, Miss.
Synopsis: Phillip Ervin (Reds) hit a towering grand slam to left center field as the South shut down the North at Trustman Park, home of the Shuckers, the Brewers’ Double-A affiliate.
Game MVP: Ervin was the MVP for his long blast.
Prospect Notes: Dansby Swanson (Braves) had two hits for the South. Willy Adames (Rays) and Kean Wong (Rays) each had two hits for the North. … Jacob Nottingham (Brewers) threw out Adames trying to steal second base. … Rays righthander Jacob Faria struck out two in his one inning of work … Diamondbacks righthander Jimmie Sherfy struck out two in an inning … Diamondbacks lefty Anthony Banda got the start and pitched a scoreless frame; Braves righthander Joey Krehbiel struck out the side … Miami’s Austin Brice and Jake Esch each struck out two in an inning.
South Atlantic League
North 2, South 1
June 21 • Lexington, Ky.
Synopsis: Max Schrock (Nationals) had two RBI hits to lead the North Division to a 2-1 win in a game that saw a combined 22 strikeouts.
Game MVP: Schrock, obviously. The 2015 13th-round pick drove in the first run with with a double to right and the second with a single to left in the fifth.
Prospect Notes: Victor Robles (Nationals) had a single, stolen base and scored on Schrock’s double. … Jefry Rodriguez (Nationals) allowed two singles, but struck out Rockies’ No. 3 prospect Brendan Rodgers … Mariano Rivera Jr. (Nationals) pitched a scoreless inning with his father, former Yankees great Mariano, watching from the stands. North starter Mitch Keller of West Virginia (Pirates) got the win after striking out two in a scoreless first inning.
Florida State League
North 1, South 0
June 18 • Fort Myers, Fla.
Synopsis: Dustin Houle‘s (Brewers) single scored Christin Stewart (Tigers), who had doubled earlier in the inning. That was the game’s only run, and the bullpen combination of Todd Van Steensel (Twins), Luis Heredia (Pirates), Rowan Wick (Cardinals) and Esmerling De La Rosa (Marlins) made the lead stand up.
Game MVP: Stewart was the MVP for driving in the game’s lone run.
Prospect Notes: Jorge Mateo (Yankees) started the game at second base and had a hit in two trips and stole a base … Outfielder Carlos Tocci (Phillies) was the lone player with multiple hits. … Stewart’s double was one of just two extra-base hits. The other belonged to outfielder Cord Sandberg (Phillies) … Nick Gordon (Twins) was 1-for-1 with a walk and played third base. … A trio of Twins hurlers—Felix Jorge, Tyler Jay and Stephen Gonsalves spun scoreless frames for the South over the first four innings. … Adam Ravenelle (Tigers) claimed the win in relief. Ravenelle was the game’s only pitcher with multiple strikeouts and was promoted to Double-A the next day.
Texas League
South 8, North 5
June 28 • Springfield, Mo.
Synopsis: Headed for Triple-A Fresno, Alex Bregman’s final act in Double-A was to play in the Texas League all-star game on Tuesday in Springfield, Mo. He went out in style, blasting a two-run homer in the South’s 8-5 win over the North. Ryan Cordell (Rangers) also homered and drove in four runs for the winners.
Game MVP: Frisco’s Cordell was MVP after going 3-for-5.
Prospect Notes: Springfield (Cardinals) second baseman Bruce Caldwell hit a three-run home run … Tulsa (Dodgers) RHP Chase DeJong started the game with a strikeout before departing; Corpus Christi (Astros) RHP Keegan Yuhl pitched a scoreless inning, as did Frisco (Rangers) lefthander Victor Payano. Tulsa (Dodgers) second baseman Willie Calhoun had a sacrifice fly.
Eastern League
Eastern 10, Western 2
July 13 • Akron, Ohio
Synopsis: Jorge Alfaro, Rhys Hoskins, Dylan Cozens and Jesmuel Valentin of Reading (Phillies) combined to go 7-for-13 with a home run and two doubles, scoring six runs and driving in three.
Game MVP: Binghamton’s Matt Oberste (Mets) had four hits and four RBIs.
Prospect Notes: Harrisburg’s Neftali Soto (Nationals) homered off Jonathan Holder of Trenton (Yankees) in the fifth for the West. … Hoskins homered; Alfaro was 3-for-3 … Eastern pitchers allowed just five hits and struck out 11; Portland lefthander Williams Jerez (Red Sox) struck out two in a scoreless inning and Trenton lefthander Jordan Montgomery (Yankees) got the start and the win.
Triple-A
International League 4, Pacific Coast League 2
July 13 • Charlotte
Synopsis: The lack of high-level bats was evident in the game, as the teams combined for just 11 hits in the International League’s win.
Game MVP: Travis Taijeron of Las Vegas (Mets) blasted a two-run homer to right-center in the second for both of the PCL’s runs on the night, earning him the PCL Top Star Award; Chris Marrero homered to center in the eighth, clearing the shrubbery that’s about 20 feet above the playing surface. The blast earned Marrero the IL Top Star Award.
Prospect Notes: Rochester’s Jorge Polanco (Twins) was the only player to get multiple hits on the night, squibbing a 40-foot single in the third and blooping a double to right in the fifth. … Columbus’ Erik Gonzalez (Indians) homered, as did Reading catcher Andrew Knapp (Phillies). … Rochester (Twins) righthander Jose Berrios got three swing-and-misses on just 20 pitches.
Northwest League/Pioneer League
Aug. 2 • Ogden, Utah
Synopsis: The Northwest League won a slugfest that saw both teams combine for 26 hits, pounding the Pioneer League 11-5.
Game MVP: Xavier Turner of Spokane (Rangers) went 3-for-3 with a homer and a pair of runs scored to lead the Northwest League. The former Vanderbilt third baseman was a 19th-round pick in 2015.
Prospect Notes: Pacific’s Gio Brusa (Giants) homered for the Northwest League. . . . UCLA alum Eric Filia (Mariners) had two hits and drove in two runs. Filia has walked 25 times and struck out just nine times for short-season Everett . . . Vancouver’s Cavan Biggio, the son of the Hall of Famer and a Blue Jays’ draft pick from Notre Dame, tripled and drove in two runs. . . . For the Pioneer League, Angels top prospect Jahmai Jones was 2-for-2 with a double and a walk.
