In a draft lacking in college shortstops, McLaughlin's ability to stay at the position and his advanced feel for the game give him a chance to be a late day two or early day three pick. There's not really a plus tool on McLaughlin's scouting report, but other than his lack of power, he has no glaring weaknesses either. The three-year starter at Kansas took a step forward at the plate this year, hitting .314/.420/.469.
