Drafted in the 3rd round (87th overall) by the San Francisco Giants in 2014 (signed for $650,000)
Davis has a long track record, having been a prominent high school player with USA Baseball. He played on gold-medal teams in 2007 at the 14U level and in 2009 on the 16U club, both as a pitcher and as a hitter. He's played both positions in college and is better known for his hitting, though he's on the short list for having the best pure arm in the Pacific Northwest. He spent two summers in the Cape Cod League as a hitter and pitcher, and his fastball has reached the upper 90s in short stints. The 6-foot, 215-pounder would be a reliever on the mound and has a chance to be an everyday player in the Josh Willingham mold as a hitter, with right-field arm strength. He needs polish defensively and has limited range due to his below-average speed. Davis has strength to his swing and produces excellent bat speed, and his raw power helped him win the Cape Cod League home run derby in 2012. However, that combination has yet to show up on the field for the Beavers, and he has just 13 career home runs. Davis' approach could use refinement, and his swing at times gets uphill, costing him contact and loft power. Davis figures to benefit from the lack of college hitters in this draft class, pushing him into the second-to-fourth-round range.
