While South Carolina's potent infield trio of Justin Smoak, Reese Havens and James Darnell (who all went among the first 69 picks in the draft) soaked up almost all of the attention from scouts last year, Houston thinks Disher could be a diamond in the rough. As the Gamecocks' senior catcher last year, he provided depth to the lineup two years after he moved onto the radar with a three-homer series that pushed South Carolina to an NCAA super-regional. He put on a power display in the New York-Penn League after signing, though scouts aren't sure yet if it will play as he moves up. Disher is pull-happy, and his approach needs work because he leads with his front side and doesn't have good balance. Breaking balls also are a problem area because he doesn't recognize them well. He's a slow runner, but the Astros are focused on his bat. They immediately moved him to first base, putting him through intense drills to improve his first-step quickness and fielding. He needs to stay down on grounders as well as maintain balance. They may also try him in left field. The Astros will push him to Lancaster, a big jump but considering his age a logical one.
