Cerny was eligible as a sophomore in this year’s draft, but he will head back to Bloomington next year as one of the more notable draft prospects in the Big Ten. This spring he hit .315/.379/.525 with 24 doubles, 10 home runs and 60 RBIs. He has an interesting look in the box and is fairly hunched over in his stance. There is some quickness in Cerny’s barrel, though he can get bar-armed at times. His power projects as average at best, and Cerny will need to tighten up his hit tool. He has the tendency to expand the strike zone, and most of his whiffs come against spin. Where I have been most pleasantly surprised with Cerny is in the field. His actions translate well at shortstop, and he has plenty of range in either direction. With an ever-improving game clock and less self-inflicted errors, I am far more confident now than I was at the start of the season that he can stick at the position long term.
