Herring is a 6-foot-2, 196-pound lefthanded reliever who has been a consistent option out of LSU’s bullpen since he stepped on campus. In his two seasons with the team Herring has posted a 2.66 ERA over 84.2 innings with a 29.8% strikeout rate and 8.8% walk rate. A draft-eligible sophomore, Herring works from the third base side of the rubber and features a long arm action with a soft stabbing action in the back of his arm stroke and works off a fastball/slider combination. He sits in the low 90s with his fastball and has been up to 94-95 mph at peak velocity. He uses a mid-80s slider with sweeping action as his primary swing-and-miss pitch and throws it nearly half the time along with his fastball. Herring has mixed in a few upper-80s changeups but it’s not a prominent piece of his arsenal and probably won’t ever need to be in the bullpen. In general he shows solid pitchability and competes with both his fastball and slider. He could be one of the first college relievers off the board early on day two, but his eligible-sophomore status might make him a trickier sign than most college relievers.
