David Andriese
Name: David Josiah Andriese
Born: Mar 2, 1991 in Redlands, CA
High School: Redlands
College: UC Riverside
Ht.: 6'2" / Wt.: 210 lbs
Bats: L / Throws: R
Drafted in the 30th round (911th overall) by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2014
The younger brother of former Riverside ace and Padres 2011 third-rounder Matt Andriese, David was hindered by a cyst and a staph infection in his back as a freshman, and it took time to regain his strength. He had his best season as a junior this spring, hitting .335/.374/.426 with one homer, 10 doubles and 43 RBIs. He still hasn't unlocked his fringe-average raw power, and he profiles as a left fielder, so many scouts view him as more of a senior sign for next year. He looks the part of a big league outfielder at 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, and he has a nice line-drive swing from the left side. His plate discipline needs refinement, as illustrated by his 36-13 strikeout-walk mark. Andriese is a below-average runner, and UCR coach Doug Smith said he was a "horrible" outfielder when he arrived on campus, but he has turned himself into a passable defender. He spends more time in right now, but his arm and range fit better in left. His best tool is his bat, which has a chance to be average, but his power needs to come.
