Organization Prospect Rankings
Former Expos righthander Tavo Alvarez and current Diamondbacks first baseman Erubiel Durazo were native Mexicans who played at Tucson's Amphitheater High en route to the major leagues. Contreras hopes to follow the path after signing with the Angels in 1999. His twin brother Albino signed with the Angels on the same day and has played with Sergio in high school, the Dominican Summer League and Butte. Contreras has a less-than-awe-inspiring physique and didn't show much in the DSL in his pro debut, but he exploded last year. He would have led the Pioneer League in batting if minor injuries hadn't cost him the at-bats he needed to qualify. Contreras will have to hit at every level to move up, because his bat is only above-average tool. He's more of a gap hitter than a slugger, and his speed and arm are decent. He played mostly first base in 2000, though the Angels say that was out of necessity and project him as a corner outfielder. One Angels official projected Contreras as a Mike Aldrete type who could be useful coming off a big league bench. This much is certain: When a guy hits .399, you promote him and see if he can continue to rake.
