Segura entered the spring largely unknown after not pitching on the summer showcase circuit and playing at remote Soledad (Calif.) High, about 90 miles south of San Jose. He emerged as a pop-up prospect this spring with added velocity and sent crosscheckers making the long trip in to see him. Segura is a 6-foot-1, 190 pound righthander with a heavy sinker that sits 89-91 mph and touches 93-94 mph. His main secondary pitch is a firm slider that flashes plus with sharp break, although it flattens out at times and is inconsistent. He’ll flash an average changeup that is also inconsistent. Segura is a good athlete with a clean delivery and fills up the strike zone. He has plenty of physical projection remaining, leading to optimism his stuff will continue ticking up. Segura requires a lot of projection, but his athleticism and solid three-pitch mix make for a strong foundation. He is committed to Oregon State.
