Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted
Age At Draft: 21.4
At 6-foot-6, 215 pounds, Copen’s frame alone makes him an intriguing option to draft. While Copen’s numbers don’t jump off the page with a career ERA of 6.30, his body and stuff gives whichever organization selects him great clay to mold. Copen largely relies on his fastball, which he threw 76% of the time this spring. He averaged 91-93 mph with the pitch, but has been clocked as high as 99. It’s an offering he supplements with a mid-80s slider that is inconsistent but shows promise as a potential out pitch down the road. He has also thrown a curveball around 80 mph with 11-to-5 shape but used the pitch less than 10% of the time this spring and doesn’t land it for strikes much. Copen will likely get an opportunity to start early in his professional career, but his future is likely in the back end of a bullpen thanks to below-average control. With some added weight and getting his lower half more engaged, it is easy to see Copen as a power reliever who routinely is touching triple digits with his fastball.

Track Record: Copen, a Marshall product, was the Dodgers’ seventh-round pick in 2023. He signed for $225,000 on the strength of a pitch package with plenty of opportunities for growth. He was one of the system’s breakout arms in 2024 until a line drive back to the mound struck him in the head and left him with injuries that ultimately cost him the vision in his right eye. Undaunted, he returned in 2025 and bullied hitters across two levels and finished with a system-best 152 strikeouts.
Scouting Report: At its best, Copen’s stuff can overwhelm hitters. He works with five pitches, including four-seam and sinking fastballs that live at 92-94 mph and peak at 99, and a cutter that comes in a couple of ticks slower. He supports the fastballs with a sweepy slider in the mid 80s and a downer curveball in the low 80s. Copen’s stuff is filthy, and his repertoire produces more swords than all of the Medieval Times restaurants combined. Problem is, he doesn’t throw enough strikes. His 87 walks were the most of any Dodgers pitcher, and his overall strike rate was just 57%. His frenetic delivery lends itself to power over precision, and none of his pitches were thrown in the zone more than 58% of the time. Copen is likely to add a changeup in 2026, but the version has not been settled upon.
The Future: Copen has more than enough stuff to be a force at the back of a bullpen. To reach that ceiling, he’ll need to throw a lot more strikes.
