Peck broke out his sophomore year at Pepperdine when he hit .361/.417/.578 while playing a solid defensive shortstop, but he hasn’t been able to replicate it. He hit .195 with 42 strikeouts in 123 at-bats for Bourne in the Cape Cod League after the season and struggled against mediocre pitching in the West Coast Conference this spring. Peck is small at 6-foot, 185 pounds, but he hits the ball extremely hard. He has plenty of bat speed and finds the barrel to post exit velocities up to 110 mph, among the highest of any shortstop in the country. Peck pummels fastballs over the plate and makes loud contact when he connects, but he has a noisy swing with a big knee pump and a wildly aggressive approach that leads to swings and misses. He struggles to recognize spin in particular and chases breaking balls out of the zone at an alarming rate. Peck is an average defender at shortstop with good instincts and should stick at the position. He has reliable hands, moves well laterally and has the average arm strength to make throws across the diamond. Peck’s approach and swing decisions are poor, but his ability to play shortstop and hit the ball hard has teams interested in the middle of the draft’s second day. He could potentially fill a backup or utility role.
