Gibault is a 6-foot-3 righthander with a big body and a big arm. Tulane toyed with the idea of starting him this year, but those plans were ultimately scrapped. He could get a chance to start in pro ball, but he'll need to improve his command of his secondary pitches to stick in a rotation. Gibault showed power stuff out of the bullpen, throwing his fastball 93-95 mph and touching 97. His slider, while inconsistent, flashes depth and bite, and he has a changeup, though never used it much as the Green Wave closer.

Track Record: Much as Diego Castillo did in 2017, Gibaut readied himself for a big league role by serving as Durham's closer. It's a role he also held at Tulane and he's been quite good at it, in part because he's always been effective against both lefthanders and righthanders.

Scouting Report: Gibaut's foundation as a pitcher has always been a big fastball. He sits 95-99 mph, although the fastball earns some 60 grades rather than the 70 its velocity would indicate because it can be a little straight. Gibault then mixes in a hard 89-91 mph slider with short but sharp tilt. It doesn't earn better grades because Gibaut hasn't proven he can consistently throw it for strikes, so hitters can learn to lay off of it. He has a fringy changeup. Gibault's control has always been fringe-average at best.

The Future: Gibaut was added to the 40-man roster in November and is ready to help the big league bullpen. He doesn't have closer-type stuff, but he should be a valuable, durable seventh-inning option.
Gibaut spent the final four months of last year as a dominant force in Double-A Montgomery's bullpen. A closer throughout his three-year stint at Tulane, Gibaut saved 10 of 15 opportunities with the Biscuits, but profiles more as a setup man at the major league level. Gibaut throws a fastball, slider and changeup, with his four-seamer sitting in the mid-90s and touching 97 mph. His power slider has a chance to be a difference-maker, but he's not consistent enough with the pitch to keep hitters from sitting on his fastball. His changeup, meanwhile, is nasty when he throws it correctly, and it works well in keeping hitters off-balance. Gibaut is equally dominant against righthanded and lefthanded batters, but lacks command and has struggled to find a consistent alignment in his stride with his landing foot. He also tends to leave pitches up in the strike zone. Gibault will open 2018 at Triple-A Durham with a chance to make his big league debut during the year.
