Channy Ortiz

The scrappy Ortiz played his freshman year at Grand Canyon before transferring to Yavapai (Ariz.) JC for a year of junior college ball before returning for two more seasons with the Antelopes. He’s been a spark plug at shortstop for Grand Canyon, starting 76 games over the two seasons since returning from Yavapai. Ortiz was an on-base machine in the 2021 season, with a .413 on-base average and 37 walks compared to only 23 strikeouts in 227 at-bats. A prototypical leadoff hitter with average speed, Ortiz will need to add a bit more power at the next level to keep from becoming a bottom-of-the-order hitter. He stood out defensively in college, with good feel, agility, and a good internal clock. He has enough arm to handle shortstop in pro ball, but profiles better at second base.
