Hartle had a chance to go in the first two rounds of the 2021 draft out of high school, but he took himself out of the running when he announced his intention to attend Wake Forest. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound lefthander has been a high-level strike-thrower for three seasons. After a tremendous 2023 campaign in which he doubled his strikeout rate, Hartle entered his draft season as a high-probability first-rounder thanks to one of the more attractive starter profiles in the class. Things did not go smoothly in 2024. He posted a career-worst 5.74 ERA in 74.2 innings and 15 starts with command that backed up and pure stuff that rarely missed bats. Hartle has a deep pitch mix that includes a sinking fastball that averages 90 mph and touches 93-94, a mid-80s sweepy slider that occasionally has a slurvy look, an upper-80s cutter and a mid-80s changeup. Hartle has an easy delivery with a low three-quarters slot that has led to plus control, though his lack of pure stuff and power means he needs to be precise with his location to avoid damage. He does a good job generating a high rate of ground balls and weak contact when he stays at the bottom of the strike zone. Hartle’s command gives him a chance to be a back-end starter, but his upside is limited without adding more power.

BA Grade/Risk: 45/Average
Adjusted Grade: 35
Track Record: Hartle signed with the Pirates for $850,000 as a third-rounder in the 2024 draft, and was then acquired by the Guardians—along with LHP Michael Kennedy—in a trade that sent Spencer Horwitz to the Pirates. In his first pro season, Hartle largely performed as expected, with a 2.54 ERA in 113.1 innings and 24 starts with modest strikeouts and solid control.
Scouting Report: Listed at 6-foot-6, 207 pounds, Hartle has a long and lean pitcher’s frame and throws from a low three-quarters slot with a bit of a crossfire landing that he repeats well. He attacks hitters with a deep arsenal of pitches—all of which he has advanced feel to land for strikes. Hartle throws a four-seam and two-seam fastball, slider, cutter and changeup. All his pitches are solid, but he lacks a true wipeout offering or reliable swing-and-miss pitch. Hartle sits in the 90-94 mph range with both his fastballs. His mid-80s slider is a slurvy pitch with decent sweeping action that gets heavy usage vs. lefties, while his 88-89 mph cutter serves as a bridge pitch between the fastballs and slider. He has solid feel to land a mid-80s slider that’s used more against righties. Hartle’s above-average command ties his mix together.
The Future: Hartle has back-end starting potential, but will have a narrow margin for error against upper-level hitters without adding more power or bite to his secondaries.

BA Grade/Risk: 45/High.
Track Record: The North Carolina native was a famous prep prospect in the 2021 class who chose to attend Wake Forest. Hartle entered the 2024 college season amid expectations as the team’s Friday night starter and next potential first-rounder. Instead, he posted a career-worst 5.74 ERA in 74.2 innings and fell to the third round, where the Pirates signed him to an $850,000 bonus. Cleveland acquired him and lefthander Michael Kennedy after the season in a trade that sent Spencer Horwitz to the Pirates.
Scouting Report: At 6-foot-5, 200 pounds, Hartle has a great pitcher’s frame and a repeatable delivery. He has never thrown particularly hard, though, combatting his lack of velocity with precise command. Hartle’s struggles this spring highlighted his limited margin for error. He averaged just 90 mph in 2024 at Wake Forest and occasionally scraped 93-94. His plus command backed up and his arsenal, which includes an above-average sweeping mid-80s slider, upper-80s cutter and a mid-80s changeup, started to blend together. His initial work with Pittsburgh’s pitching development program centered on restoring separation across his pitch mix, and his fastball averaged nearly 92 mph in his lone pro outing.
The Future: Hartle is an interesting project for Cleveland’s savvy pitching development machine. If his velocity bounces back, he has the strike-throwing acumen and polish to move quickly and profile as a back-of-the-rotation starter.
