Drafted in the 1st round (3rd overall) by the Los Angeles Angels in 1997 (signed for $2,000,000)
Glaus answered a lot of questions this year, quieting critics who were critical of his makeup. He showed a more mature approach and played with heart. He also corrected holes in his swing and made routine plays more consistently, even as he moved from third base to shortstop (the position he prefers). Glaus entered UCLA as the highest unsigned pick from the 1994 draft and has gotten better every year, batting .258 as a freshman, .352 as a sophomore and .413 thus far as a junior. He had slugged 31 home runs this year, topping his first two seasons combined. Glaus reminds scouts of the Indians' Matt Williams, who was drafted as a power-hitting shortstop with the No. 3 pick in the June 1986 draft. He's got the whole package: athleticism, power to all fields, classic third-base actions and above-average arm strength. He's also quick and agile, traits rarely found in 6-foot-5, 225-pound players.
