Sadler seemed solid in his commitment to Oklahoma State coming out of junior college, but the Pirates took a shot on him in the 25th round of the 2010 draft and wound up wooing him with a $100,000 bonus. He joined the 40-man roster following the 2013 season, then made his major league debut in 2014. Sadler gets good sinking action on a fringe-average 90-91 mph fastball that will occasionally hit 94 and induce batters to hit the ball on the ground. He also mixes in a slider and changeup. Though both rate as average pitches, they work to keep hitters off his sinker. While Sadler is not overpowering, he is not afraid to attack the strike zone and rarely hurts himself with walks. He fields his position well and controls the running game, and his poise and mound presence would play well in the bullpen. Pittsburgh's rotation depth may push him to that role in 2015, which will likely include a repeat of Triple-A.

One of the more extreme groundball-oriented starters in the IL, Sadler turned in a breakthrough performance in 2014 that earned him three different callups to the contending Pirates. He ranked among the IL leaders in ERA, WHIP (1.19) and walk rate (1.7 per nine innings). Sadler can run his fastball up to 94 mph; it sits in the low 90s with plus sinking and tailing action. He mixes in his average slider and changeup very well, and his three pitches play up because he has outstanding control. Some scouts like Sadler as a back-of-the-rotation arm, though he has the stuff, control and mettle to close. "He has the perfect makeup for a closer," Indianapolis manager Dean Treanor said. "He doesn't get ratted, and for a young guy that's rare."
