In the wake of an impressive freshman year, Pitzer took a bit of a step back this spring and posted a 6.99 ERA with a modest strikeout-to-walk ratio of 32-to-28 across 28.1 innings. However, he returned to form and then some this summer on the Cape after pitching to a minuscule 0.34 ERA with 36 strikeouts to nine walks across 26.1 innings en route to taking home Pitcher of the Year honors. Pitzer pitches off his plus low-80s slider, and this summer it’s a pitch for which he’s demonstrated an advanced feel. He throws it 43% of the time, and it’s generated whiff and chase rates of 50% and 39%, respectively. Pitzer’s fastball sits in the low 90s, but it flashes solid life in the top half of the zone. Whether it’s as a starter or a trusted reliever, Pitzer will have a prominent role this spring at Mississippi State.
