Matthews stood out early on for his size and athleticism, committing to South Carolina for baseball when he was in eighth grade. A standout football player at wide receiver, Matthews reopened his recruitment after the 2023 summer, then in July 2024 committed to Virginia Tech to play both sports. Matthews plans to enroll early in college and play baseball in 2025, though he’s still technically 2025 draft eligible until he steps on campus. Between a wrist injury this summer and his football schedule, scouts haven’t had many recent looks at Matthews, but he has gotten bigger, faster and stronger with plus-plus speed underway now. It’s a power-over-hit offensive profile with a chance to be a power/speed threat in center field if everything clicks.
