Jones played safety on Stanford’s football team as a freshman before dropping the sport to focus on baseball full-time. He spent three seasons as a starter in Stanford’s outfield and propelled the Cardinal to the College World Series as a sophomore with three home runs in the clinching game of the Super Regional. He again led Stanford to the College World Series as a junior this spring, leading the team in runs (76), extra-base hits (38), stolen bases (15), on-base percentage (.455) and slugging percentage (665) through Super Regionals. Jones is a streaky hitter who tends to start slowly before heating up late in seasons. He’s patient at the plate and has excellent strike-zone discipline, but his swing is stiff and lacks natural rhythm and timing in the batter’s box, leading to too many swings and misses. He struggles against pitches on the outer half in particular and is often late on fastballs down the middle. Jones has plus raw power and hits the ball hard when he does connect. He is a plus runner and above-average defender in center field with a loose, natural gait. His below-average arm is his weakest tool. Jones is built like a football player with his bulky, muscular frame and has little projection remaining. He plays hard with an aggressive, football-type mentality and has a track record of performing his best at the biggest moments. Jones will need to make significant improvements to his swing to be even a fringe-average hitter, but if he can, he has the approach, strength and athleticism to post high on-base percentages and hit 20 home runs per year while staying in center field. His athleticism and performance have teams interested in the top two rounds.
