Brown emerged as one of the top power hitters in the class with an impressive performance at Perfect Game National, where he showed plus raw power. After struggling with swing-and-miss issues at times in the summer, Brown improved his contact ability greatly in the spring, leading more evaluators to believe that his righthanded power could play. Brown tends to get pull-happy, casting his hands and extending early. He doesn't have elite timing yet, but he was trending in the right direction before he tore his Achilles tendon in the middle of his senior season. Brown also shows intriguing tools in the outfield, moving well for his size and showing potential for an above-average arm. As he grows into his body, Brown may to slow down and end up in left field, and the Achilles injury makes a potential move to left all the more likely. A 10th round pick by the Cardinals last June, Brown likely would have been drafted in the first or second round had he not torn his Achilles--a freak injury that occurred when he jumped to celebrate a play in the outfield. Originally a Miami signee, Brown got to campus but left before he played a single game, going to Spartanburg Methodist (S.C.) in order to re-enter the draft pool. However, Brown once again suffered another freak injury this spring, popping his shoulder out of the joint and tearing his labrum while swinging and missing at a pitch. Through rest and rehab, Brown returned for the final two weeks of the season and hit his 11th homer of the year--he's got plus-plus raw power. But Brown will likely need surgery to repair the shoulder over the summer. A corner outfielder at the next level, Brown's power is his best tool and should be alluring enough to get him drafted again, but how high he goes might depend on what teams make of his unusual medical history. -
