Phillips Takes Center Stage

Bill Shaikin -Premium Content

The Angels sent P.J. Phillips to the outfield last summer. They might have saved his career. Phillips, younger brother of Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips, had infield star written all over him. The Angels selected him in the second round of the 2005 draft out of a Georgia high school and anticipated he would blossom in the middle of the infield. Phillips made 40 errors at shortstop at low Class A Cedar Rapids in 2007 and another 38 at high A Rancho Cucamonga in 2008. The Angels sent him back to Rancho Cucamonga last season, as a second baseman. By the end of July he was a center fielder.

Minor League Executive Of The Year

However, he's no simple face in the crowd, but rather one of the most respected, and busy, operators in the game.
