Garcia was a center fielder for two seasons at Pepperdine before moving to second base in 2001, where he profiled better as a pro. Just two years later he was starting for the Mets, as injuries and trades created an opening. He'll be a reserve at best now after New York signed Kazuo Matsui and shifted Jose Reyes from shortstop to second. There's nothing spectacular about Garcia. He has shown a solid batting eye but has no plus tool. Compared to Victor Diaz, he has much less star potential but is much more likely to reach his ceiling. Garcia is an adequate second baseman with decent speed on the basepaths and the ability to hit for average with doubles power. His best long-term fit may be as a utility infielder. He played 18 games at shortstop in high Class A and has seen time in the outfield. If he doesn't make the Mets out of spring training, he'll probably share second base with Diaz and gain experience at other positions in Triple-A.
