Within the span of about three hours, the Nationals bid adieu to a pair of veterans on expiring contracts. Righthander Jason Marquis, the second of those veterans, packed his bags for Phoenix after being traded to the Diamondbacks straight up for low Class A shortstop/third baseman Zach Walters. Arizona assumes all of Marquis' remaning salary, about $2.5 million.

Echoing the deal the two teams struck exactly two years ago, the Tigers acquired pitching help from the Mariners in exchange for four prospects. Detroit received righthanders Doug Fister and David Pauley, while Seattle received outfielder Casper Wells and lefty Charlie Furbush, two players in their mid-20s, plus third baseman Francisco Martinez and a player to be named.
