With four rookies in their starting rotation, the Marlins have taken extra steps to ensure the collective health of those young pitchers. Even when there are off days in the schedule, the Marlins make a point of staying in rotation and not skipping anybody. There was also talk of going to a six-man rotation in the season's final month with veteran Brian Moehler moving back into the mix in order to preserve the young arms.

Gaby Sanchez' first full season of pro ball was a mixed bag. Which seemed fitting considering the various gloves he must carry around in his equipment bag. On the plus side, the former Miami standout made a strong showing with the bat at low Class A Greensboro, where South Atlantic League managers named him the player with the best strike zone judgment in the annual Best Tools survey.

Brett Hayes made a quick impression in his first professional season. Unfortunately, bad luck kept the catcher from doing the same in his first big league training camp. Hayes, 22, broke the hamate bone in his left wrist while swinging through a pitch during an intrasquad scrimmage early in camp. He was expected to miss four to six weeks, and he was hoping it would be closer to the short end of that projection.
