This time: May 10-16
Previous installment: May 2-9
Check out theTransactions Glossary for help in deciphering the various inactive lists presented below. And check out last week’s Prospect Injury Report features updates on the status of Wilson Ramos and Chris Valaika.
Arizona Diamondbacks
Placed on restricted list: 3B Agustin Murillo
Recalled: RHP Bobby Korecky, LHP Clay Zavada
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Bryan Augenstein, OF Gerardo Parra
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Bobby Korecky
Optioned to Double-A: LHP Clay Zavada
After being a third-team preseason All-American in 2007, Augenstein had a modest 8-5, 4.98 junior season for Florida, falling to the seventh round of the ‘07 draft. He had a 7-5, 2.74 season between two Class A stops a year ago, walking just 14 in 131 overall innings. This spring, Augenstein led the minors with a 0.78 ERA through his first six starts for Double-A Mobile. That’s three runs in 35 innings, all while sporting a nifty 31-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio and not allowing a home run. Augenstein, 22, garnered attention this spring with a 86-91 mph sinker, which he varies speeds with and throws with a slinging arm action, and a sweeping slider that eats up righthanded batters. The Southern League variety hit an anemic .094/.147/.125 (6-for-64) against him this season.
Murillo, 27, failed a test for Clenbuterol and garnered a 50-game suspension. The native of Mexico played for his home county in the World Baseball Classic and also played in the Mexican League during the ’07 and ’08 seasons. Zavada followed a circuitious path to the big leagues, going from Diamondbacks draft pick to the independent leagues and, finally, to Arizona.
Atlanta Braves
Placed on 7-day DL: 2B Travis Jones, 3B Albaro Campusano, OF Calvin Culver
Reinstated from DL: LHP Cole Rohrbough
Baltimore Orioles
Signed: C Zach Booker
Recalled: OF Nolan Reimold
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Bob McCrory
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Jim Hoey, 2B Ryan Adams, 2B Paco Figueroa
Reinstated from DL: RHP Jason Berken, SS Pedro Florimon
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Cliff Flagello
Reimold, 25, earned his callup by bashing his way through the International League, batting .394/.485/.743 with nine home runs in 109 at-bats for Triple-A Norfolk. He ranked second in the minors in slugging and third in on-base percentage, as of this morning, as detailed in Getting To Know Your Minor League Leaders. He’s 4-for-his-first-17 (.235) n the big leagues.
Boston Red Sox
Released: RHP Dan Miceli
Recalled: SS Gil Velazquez
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Daniel Bard
Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: LHP Javier Lopez
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Adam Mills, C Carlos Maldonado
Reinstated from DL: RHP Ryne Lawson, C Mark Wagner
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Dan Miceli
Chicago Cubs
Recalled: RHP Jose Ascanio
Placed on 7-day DL: C Mario Mercedes, 2B Robinson Chirinos, OF Tyler Colvin
Reinstated from DL: RHP Kevin Kreier, RHP Steve Vento, OF Cliff Andersen
Chicago White Sox
Released: C Matt Inouye
Added to 40-man roster: LHP Jimmy Gobble
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Jose Contreras
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Matthew Long, RHP Miguel Socolovich, 1B Daryle Ward, OF Kenny Williams Jr.
Reinstated from DL: LHP Mike Johnston
Released by both the Royals and Rangers in spring training, Gobble signed with the White Sox and showed the same pronounced platoon split that he always has. With Triple-A Charlotte, he allowed a miniscule .276 OPS to lefthanded batters—but an .830 figure to righties. Just 27, Gobble may have a long career as a situational lefty if those trends hold.
Cincinnati Reds
Released: RHP David Shafer, OF Daniel Perales
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Matt Klinker, OF Norris Hopper
Reinstated from DL: RHP Lance Janke
Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Rafael Gonzalez
Cleveland Indians
Signed: RHP Blaine Neal
Released: RHP Mike Finocchi
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Jeremy Sowers, 2B Josh Barfield
Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: RHP Vinnie Chulk
Placed on 7-day DL: 1B Stephen Head, 3B Wes Hodges, 3B Jeremie Tice, OF Tim Fedroff
Reinstated from DL: OF Delvi Cid
Seeking help for a treacherous bullpen, the Indians signed a pair of well-traveled relievers: Luis Vizcaino on the major league side and Neal on the minor league side. Cut by the Phillies coming out of spring training, the 31-year-old Neal revitalized his career in ’08, making the Tigers’ Triple-A Toledo roster out of tryout camp and proceeding to post a 1.21 ERA and 26 saves in the International League. He topped off his comeback by pitching for Team USA in the Beijing Olympics, though he fared poorly.
Colorado Rockies
Added to 40-man roster: LHP Randy Flores
Optioned transferred: RHP Ryan Mattheus (High A to AA)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Shane Lindsay, RHP Chaz Roe, 2B Erik Wetzel

Traded: RHP Eric Basurto to Royals for future considerations
Placed on suspended list: RHP Daniel Barone
Added to 40-man roster: LHP John Koronka
Optioned to Triple-A: OF Brett Carroll, OF Cameron Maybin
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Dallas Trahern
Reinstated from DL: 2B Jake Smolinski
Placed on temporarily inactive list: OF Tom Hickman
Barone, who made spot starts for the ’07 Marlins and who this year has struggled to a 6.75 ERA with Triple-A New Orleans, was suspended for four games for a beaning incident at Round Rock. The Marlins’ Opening Day center fielder, Maybin fell into a tailspin at the plate, batting just .202/.280/.310 with strikeouts in 37 percent of his at-bats, before being demoted to New Orleans. It’s easy to lose sight of the fact that he’s still just 22.
Houston Astros
Released: RHP Paul Estrada, C Lou Palmisano
Recalled: RHP Jeff Fulchino
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Jeff Fulchino, C J.R. Towles
Placed on 7-day DL: SS Ricardo Bonfante
Reinstated from DL: C Lou Palmisano, 3B Chris Johnson, SS Wladimir Sutil
Placed on temporarily inactive list: 1B Kody Hinze, OF Eli Iorg
Kansas City Royals
Acquired: RHP Eric Basurto from Marlins for future considerations
Recalled: RHP Luke Hochevar
Reinstated from DL: RHP Matt Wright
Los Angeles Angels
Released: RHP Chad Blackwell
Recalled: C Bobby Wilson
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Anthony Ortega, RHP Rafael Rodriguez, C Bobby Wilson
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Ysmael Carmona, RHP Anthony Ortega, C Chris Rosenbaum
Reinstated from DL: LHP Drew Taylor
Los Angeles Dodgers
Released: RHP Arismendy Castillo, RHP Joseph Jones, 2B Johnny Washington
Placed on restricted list: RHP Yennifree Hanson
Added to 40-man roster: LHP Eric Milton
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP James McDonald
Optioned transferred: OF Jaime Hoffmann (AA to AAA)
Placed on 7-day DL: 2B Preston Mattingly, OF Jason Repko
Reinstated from DL: RHP Arismendy Castillo, RHP Josh Wall, 2B Johnny Washington, SS Justin Fuller
Milton joins Jeff Weaver on the I Can’t Believe They’re Big Leaguers portion of the Dodgers’ pitching staff. Chad Billingsley, Randy Wolf, Clayton Kershaw and Eric Stults all are throwing well, Hiroki Kuroda is on the DL and James McDonald has struggled to a 6.75 ERA in the No. 5 slot. Enter Milton and Weaver, who have fared well in their role as swingmen. Despite missing all of ’08 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, Milton bounced back to go 3-2, 2.83 for Triple-A Albuquerque to start the year, seeing his first action since May 8, 2007. He didn’t allow a run in three road starts with Albuquerque, going 3-0, 0.00, which did a lot to obscure his 5.82 ERA at home in Isotopes Park.
Milwaukee Brewers
Granted free agency: 1B Brad Nelson
Recalled: 3B Mat Gamel
Optioned to Triple-A: C Carlos Corporan
Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: 1B Brad Nelson
Gamel, 23, batted .336/.428/.647 with eight home runs and 31 RBIs in 33 games for Triple-A Nashville, so the Brewers opted to call him up to pinch-hit and then serve as DH during the club’s road interleague schedule.
Minnesota Twins
Recalled: C Jose Morales
Placed on 7-day DL: C Wilson Ramos, OF Joe Benson
Ramos broke the tip of his left middle finger, an injury you can read more about in Prospect Injury Report.
New York Mets
Signed: LHP Tom Martin, C Javier Valentin
Released: RHP Wendy Rosa
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Nelson Figueroa
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Jonathon Niese
Optioned transferred: 1B Nick Evans (AAA to AA)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP John Madden, LHP Adam Bostick
Reinstated from DL: RHP Manuel Alvarez, RHP Chris Schwinden, RHP Tobi Stoner
Things seemed to be going well for Evans . . . until he inexplicably stopped hitting with Triple-A Buffalo this season. He opened the year at 7-for-75 (.093) with a double and three homers in 22 games, and now he heads back to extended spring training to clear his head in preparation for an assignment to Double-A. The 23-year-old Evans capably handled himself in the big leagues last year, serving in a platoon role and batting .319/.380/.514 versus lefthanders. He played well in spring training, too, hitting three home runs and driving in 12 while batting .263/.330/.488.
“It’s not a thing where I feel like I can’t hit. I feel good. Just things haven’t gone my way so far,” Evans told Adam Rubin, our Mets correspondent.
New York Yankees
Signed: RHP Daniel Miller, RHP Josh Towers
Traded: RHP Eric Hacker to Pirates for RHP Romulo Sanchez
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Brett Tomko
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP David Robertson
Designated for assignment: RHP Eric Hacker
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Alan Horne, 2B Kevin Russo
Reinstated from DL: LHP Manuel Banuelos, 1B Shelley Duncan, 3B Justin Leone, OF Edwar Gonzalez
With a multitude of mature pitching prospects to choose from, the Yankees had no room for Hacker, whom they designated for assignment. They got a fair return for him in trade, netting 25-year-old live-armed relief prospect Romulo Sanchez from the Pirates. At 6-foot-5, 260 pounds, Sanchez cuts an imposing figure on the mound, and he has peak velocity (98 mph) to match—though he usually sits in the low 90s with good life. He’s aggressive with the pitch, but his command is just fair, as is curveball.
Oakland Athletics
Signed: LHP Justin Hampson
Released: RHP Jose Brito
Traded: 3B Joe Dillon to Rays as player to be named in trade for 2B Adam Kennedy
Returned Rule 5 selection: OF Ben Copeland (to Giants)
Recalled: OF Aaron Cunningham
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Jeff Gray, LHP Jerry Blevins
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Jason Glushon, RHP Jose Guzman, RHP Jerome Williams, 1B Sean Doolittle
Reinstated from DL: RHP Jose Fragoso, RHP Jason Ray, 2B Joe Dillon, SS Christian Vitters, OF Aaron Cunningham
Cunningham, 23, returned from a separated shoulder to go 5-for-12 (with two home runs and two doubles) for Triple-A Sacramento, earning a callup to Oakland.
Philadelphia Phillies
Released: RHP Pedro Carpio, C Ferrel Gomez, OF Ruddy Rio-Nunez, OF Angus Roeger, OF Damarii Saunderson
Recalled: RHP Andrew Carpenter
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Andrew Carpenter
Optioned transferred: RHP Scott Nestor (AAA to AA)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Zack Sterner, LHP Matt German, LHP Jared Simon
Reinstated from DL: RHP Manny Ayala, RHP Scott Nestor
Pittsburgh Pirates
Traded: RHP Romulo Sanchez to Yankees for RHP Eric Hacker
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Eric Hacker, SS Brian Bixler
Placed on 7-day DL: C Adam Melhuse, C Milver Reyes
Reinstated from DL: RHP Wilson Ortiz, SS Brian Friday
St. Louis Cardinals
Placed on restricted list: RHP Kenny Maiques
Recalled: OF Nick Stavinoha
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Mitchell Boggs
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Ian Ostlund, 1B Andrew Brown, 3B David Freese, OF Joe Mather
Reinstated from DL: RHP Kyle Mura, LHP Kat Maekawa, 2B Jarrett Hoffpauir
Maiques tested positive for a drug of abuse and will sit for 50 games.
San Diego Padres
Released: RHP Dylan Axelrod, OF Sam Carter
Traded: 2B Kevin Howard to Blue Jays for future considerations
Recalled: LHP Joe Thatcher, OF Drew Macias
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Greg Burke
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Edwin Moreno, LHP Arturo Lopez
Placed on 7-day DL: C Adam Zornes, SS Beamer Weems
Reinstated from DL: RHP Tim Stauffer, LHP Nick Schmidt, C Colt Morton, 1B Brian Joynt, 2B Matt Antonelli, 2B Eric Sogard, OF Kellen Kulbacki
Undrafted out of Duke, Burke turned pro with independent Atlantic City (Atlantic) in ’05 before the Padres signed him in March ’06. He put himself in the organization’s plans with a strong turn as closer for Double-A San Antonio last year. The 26-year-old struck out 92 and walked 17 in 84 innings for the Missions, posting a 2.24 ERA, on the heels of a pair of uninspiring years in ’06 and ’07. Burke owes his success to a low-90s sinker that he can spot to both sides of the plate with occasional tailing action. (Some reports last year had him touching 94.) His slider rates as major league average and changeup features sinking action when it’s on.
San Francisco Giants
Recalled: LHP Patrick Misch
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Osiris Matos
Seattle Mariners
Released: 1B Javier Brito
Placed on 7-day DL: C Travis Howell
Reinstated from DL: RHP Michael Pineda, LHP Chris Seddon
Reinstated from inactive list: SS Leury Bonilla
Tampa Bay Rays
Signed: 3B Joe Dillon
Released: RHP Matt Walker
Acquired: 3B Joe Dillon from Athletics as player to be named in trade of 2B Adam Kennedy
The Rays’ 10th-round pick who signed for $600,000 in ’04, Walker seemed destined for big things after a solid pro debut the next year in the Appy League. He struck out 71 in 58 innings with the help of a big 12-to-6 curveball, and he continued to pitch well in low Class A in ’06. Things began to spiral out of control for Walker in ’07, when first his best friend was killed in a house fire and then he couldn’t find the strike zone with high Class A Vero Beach. He walked 82 batters in 96 innings that year, and then 47 in 67 innings in ’08, before being suspended for 50 games last July for failing a test for amphetamines. Walker, 22, did not play for a Rays farm club this spring.
Texas Rangers
Released: RHP Ryan Schlecht
Optioned to Triple-A: SS Joaquin Arias
Optioned transferred: RHP Thomas Diamond (AAA to AA)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Michael Schlact, 2B German Duran, OF Joe Gaetti, OF Tim Smith

Toronto Blue Jays
Acquired: 2B Kevin Howard from Padres for future considerations
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Bill Murphy, LHP Ricky Romero
Optioned transferred: RHP Casey Janssen (High A to AA)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Wade Miller, LHP Chuck Huggins, 2B Scott Campbell, OF Russ Adams, OF Eric Thames
Reinstated from DL: RHP Dustin Antolin, RHP Chad Beck, RHP Adrian Martin, SS Justin Jackson
Washington Nationals
Released: RHP Gary Glover
Granted free agency: LHP Mike Hinckley
Returned Rule 5 selection: RHP Terrell Young (to Reds)
Recalled: C Josh Bard
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Jesus Colome
Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: LHP Mike Hinckley
Placed on 7-day DL: C John Poppert, OF Lastings Milledge
Reinstated from DL: C John Poppert, C Travis Reagan
Young was the first pick in the 2008 Rule 5 draft and didn’t get off the disabled list and into a major league game before being returned to his original organization.
